Frequently Asked Questions About Home Theater, Security, Wiring

Q. Do I really need to run structured wiring in my house?

A. Structured wiring is the most significant change in home wiring in 20 years. Without it, your home won't be able to take advantage of all of the new digital information. See the structured wiring section of this web site for more information.

Q. With wireless technology so readily available, why do I need to run network wiring in my home?

A. Although wireless networking has come a long way, it's still not as fast or reliable as a hardwired network. And regardless, the wireless access points must still be hard wired.

Q. If I have satellite TV, do I need a telephone wire everywhere I am going to have a receiver?

A. The simple answer is yes. The more complicated answer is only if you're going to order pay-per-view. You can plug your receivers into a phone line when you first start your service to activate them. Thereafter, you can unplug them from the phone line.

Q. How costly is it to retrofit wiring in my house later?

A. Sometimes more than double the cost of doing it originally.

Q. Should I run all of my audio wiring into my Connection Center with my phone and cable wires?

A. No. That will limit you on what kinds of audio systems you can install later. The audio wiring should be run to a location designated as your “head-end”, where your audio components are going to be located. This is usually in a cabinet or in a rack located in the main entertainment area or in a designated media closet.

Q. How beneficial are the "Whole House Audio" systems compared to a volume control based audio system?

A. For large families, they are very beneficial giving you the ability to play different sources of music in different rooms simultaneously. They usually incorporate the ability to control your source devices remotely as well through local keypads or through IR signals.

Q. What is DLP and why is it better than projection televisions?

A. DLP is Digital Light Processing. DLP can be a projection television. It's one of the major advancements in chip technology.

Q. When considering either a Big screen TV or a projector, what are the main factors that I should consider?

A. Some factors you should consider are: 1) How close will you be sitting to the screen, 2) Size of the room and probably the most important one - your budget.

Q. Do In-Wall speakers sound as good as bookshelf speakers?

A. It all depends on what is behind the in-wall speaker. In some cases, they will sound better. They are designed and engineered to perform in a typical wall or ceiling cavity so there is not much noticeable difference in sound, if any at all.

Q. Why is Aluminum cone speakers better sounding than, your typical polypropylene cones?

A. Aluminum drivers have several advantages over other driver cone materials. The aluminum cone has a greater strength to weight ratio than polypropylene (plastic), paper or woven glass cones. Aluminum is the material of choice for making products where high tensile strength and low weight are essential. It is important for a cone to act like a piston through the operating range of the driver. Paper and plastic cones tend to flex or "break up" at low and high frequency extremes. This flexing results in nonlinear response (breakup and compression) whereas our aluminum cone driver retains its pistonic motion through out the pass band even when driven to extremes.
